Condoleezza Rice has given a firm response to the accusations that the Bush administration did not take terrorism seriously before September 11th. There are now two competing versions of the story, and in a polarised America voters are likely to believe the one they were already inclined to believe
SHE will not have enjoyed much of it, but she did what she had to do. On Thursday April 8th, Condoleezza Rice, George Bush’s national security adviser, spent almost three hours, under oath, rebutting the charge that the administration had neglected the threat of terrorism before September 11th. Five Democrats and five Republicans on a special commission investigating the attacks grilled Ms Rice over a variety of issues: how active was Mr Bush’s personal interest in al-Qaeda during his first months in office? Why was there not an early cabinet-level meeting to discuss terrorism? In short, could the attacks have been prevented? On all counts, she gave a firm response.

Three issues recurred throughout Ms Rice’s testimony. One was a briefing given to the president on August 6th, 2001?just over a month before the attacks on the World Trade Centre?entitled “Bin Laden determined to attack inside the United States”. Before Ms Rice’s testimony, administration officials had insisted that the spike of terrorist “chatter” during the summer of 2001 related to terrorist attacks abroad, potentially in Israel, the Persian Gulf or Genoa at a meeting of the G8. Several commissioners pointed to the August 6th briefing as proof that the president, and Ms Rice, should have taken more seriously the threat of an attack in America itself. Ms Rice, however, repeatedly argued that the report was a historical and analytical account of Osama bin Laden’s aims, not a specific threat warning, much less “actionable” intelligence that could have prevented the attacks. Several of the Democratic commissioners remained unconvinced. The commission has asked that the briefing, which they have seen but remains classified, be declassified by next week.

The campaign billboard outside JR Kumamoto Station exhorted, "Make our dreams come true -- a shinkansen for Kyushu." After years of planning, the 126-km-long section of the new line between Kagoshima and Yatsushiro cities began running March 13. But for many local residents, asserts author Manabu Tateyama in Shukan Kinyobi, the two-week-old Kyushu Shinkansen is already turning out to be a noisy, debt-ridden nightmare.

The original Tokaido Shinkansen, linking Tokyo and Osaka, initiated a new era of high-speed rail service in October 1964. Safe, efficient and profitable, its success became synonymous with Japan's emergence as an economic giant.

It's only natural for Kyushu to desire a more modern rail service too. Conventional expresses from Hakata and Kagoshima now take three hours and 40 minutes. The new line, when completed in 2012, will cut the 300-km journey to two hours and 10 minutes. But on second thought, does rural, agrarian Kyushu really require such speed? Or the noise that comes with it?

U.S. reports Pyongyang's abductions
米国、北朝鮮拉致事件を取り上げる
WASHINGTON (Kyodo) The United States will for the first time mention North Korea's abductions of Japanese nationals in an annual report on global terrorism, U.S. government sources said Monday.
The mention of the abductions means the U.S. will not remove North Korea from its "state supporters of terrorism" list unless Pyongyang resolves the issue.

Japan has been asking the U.S. to include the issue in the global terrorism report in response to requests from relatives of the abductees.

In this year's report, to be released at the end of April, the U.S. will state that North Korean leader Kim Jong Il admitted the involvement of North Korean agents in the abductions when he met with Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi in Pyongyang in September 2002, the sources said.

During Koizumi's visit to Pyongyang, North Korea admitted its agents abducted 13 Japanese in the late 1970s and early 1980s. It said eight have since died there, and let the other five go home.

His comments came as the International Monetary Fund gave a glowing assessment of the UK's prospects, forecasting that its economy would grow at 3.5 per cent this year - twice the pace of growth in the recession-bound eurozone and right at the top end of the Treasury's own once-derided projections.

Britain's most senior policeman was today retracing the last movements of Diana, Princess of Wales, as part of his inquiry into her death.
Scotland Yard Commissioner Sir John Stevens travelled to Paris to see for himself the Pont d'Alma tunnel where Diana's car crashed seven years ago.
英国の警察トップが今日、ダイアナ妃の死亡に関する調査に関してダイアナ英国皇太子妃の死亡の経緯を再調査した。ジョン・スティーヴンスロンドン警視総監はパリに渡り、7年前にダイアナ妃の乗った車が事故を起こしたアルマトンネルを自ら視察した。
As part of his investigations to find out what caused the tragedy Sir John also visited the Ritz Hotel from where Diana's Mercedes limousine set out.

He then drove along the route the car took before it crashed, killing Diana, Dodi Fayed and the driver, Henri Paul. Sir John also inspected the tunnel area on foot.

After months of waiting and speculating, Google finally filed with the SEC for a $2.7 billion IPO. This is HUGE news, but the excitement wasn't enough to save the market. Wall Street was still mired in anxiety following the Commerce Department's report on the economy, which showed GDP grew at a disappointing 4.2% adjusted annual rate in the first quarter. Economists expected 5%. The report also sparked fears of inflation and rate hikes. The economic news and mixed earnings results sent the Dow down 70.33 to 10,272.27, while Nasdaq slumped 30.76 points to 1,958.78. Here's what's going on today.

Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld on Tuesday condemned the abuse of Iraqi prisoners by U.S. soldiers and said the Defense Department would move vigorously to bring those responsible to justice.
